Even if it is a little atypical for my stories, today I will talk about wedding photography.
Although I have been a professional photographer for over 20 years, I started shooting wedding photography only a few years ago. Why? I don’t know the exact answer, maybe because I’m a perfectionist and wedding photography requires some special knowledge and skills, experience and quality equipment.
I will tell you a little about what wedding photography means and why you don’t have to compromise if you want to bring back in time those moments with joy.
I was never happy to photograph a wedding for only a few hours, it seemed too commercial for me, without personality and storyless. Each time I asked the bride and groom to buy the complete package: save the date, wedding day and trash the dress.
Why? Because at “save the date” we have the opportunity to get to know each other better and even to build a friendship. The “Wedding day” is quite stressful and demanding for the bride and groom, maybe the last thing they want to take on board is a stressful photographer. Apart from that, it is also my advantage as a photographer that the bride and groom would be relaxed and smiling.
“Trash the dress” session allows me to take out some portraits with the bride and groom that are often much more successful than on the wedding day and is a lot of fun also.
I talked before about the fact that wedding photography involves a lot of skills. The wedding photographer must master several techniques.
First of all, to be a very good portrait photographer, both indoor and outdoor. The photographer has to know how to take advantage of ambient light and combine it with artificial light to get the best results. The photographer must foresee every moment because he has to capture feelings.
Then a good Event photographer, especially at the reception. There the photographer has to capture moments that generate emotions, I don’t just mean the first dance, there are enough moments during the reception that you have to be seen and to be prepared and to have the right reaction to put them in a story.
Product photographer, many people will wonder why? There are some details for which as a photographer you should give importance: the wedding rings, the bouquet, the bride and groom’s accessories, but don’t forget the cake.
Shall I carry on? Imagine that you are getting married somewhere a few miles from home in a beautiful hotel or even thousands of miles away near to the beach in Greece, or somewhere in Provance, in a beautiful Chateau or even in the top of the mountains in Scotland. The photographs must capture all of this, the photographs must render exactly that the viewer understands where the wedding was, whether it was a sunny day or was raining, it was early in the morning or at sunset, on the beach or in middle of nowhere. The photographer must have knowledge of photojournalistic, documentary and travel photography.
I specialized myself in “destination wedding”, this helps me to combine the pleasure of travelling with work and gives me the opportunity to spend more time with the happy couple. When I do a destination wedding, is another skill that I learned from landscape photography, research. Research is essential because you rarely have the opportunity to photograph a wedding in the same place twice, and the final photos should not be boring at all. Doing research, I mean the places where I’m allowed to photograph, photography permits for drone or underwater, the weather, the sunset or sunrise time, tide times if the place is by the coast and many other details that can be in the advantage of a successful photo shoot.
And last but not least, photo editing skills.
I learned all this, one at the time and when I was ready I photographed the first wedding.
In the next post, I will give you some advice on how to choose the right wedding photographer for your special day.
