Seven days in Isle of Skye – May 2016

Scottish Piper Isle of Skye

The Isle of Skye has dramatic landscapes like some of the most scenic in Scotland. The best way to experience its epic mountains, waterfalls, and sea cliffs is on a road trip. You can fly to Glasgow or Inverness and then rent a car. Most of the iconic places in Isle of Sky are between 30 minutes and one hour drive from Portree, the main city on island.

Most of the people when they think to visit Scotland, they choose the big cities; Edinburgh, Glasgow or the  Highlands and Loch Ness. I choose Isle of Skye because of the standing landmarks around the island: The Storr, Quiraning, The Fairy Pools, Neist Point Lighthouse, Cuillin, Elgol, Dunvegan Castle and another few. I planed the trip in May 2016. I drove from London to Glen Coe, where I have spend the night. Then I made a short break in Glenfinnan to photograph The Jacobite. Unfortunately in that day the train didn’t show up. My next stop was in Dornie for Eilean Donan Castle, but for the this castle I will make another journey. That because I have to stay there at least one sunset and one sunrise.

Isle of Skye

I spend seven days in Isle of Skye, almost of the time the sky was perfectly clear. Except few mornings when I photograph The Storr  was really foggy. Actually in the morning when I went up to The Storr the visibility was just few meters. The Quiraning is very easy to access but when I went there was foggy and windy too. I will come back for those two landmarks this year in April, maybe I will be lucky that time and the weather will be with me. Please see bellow the pictures what I took during on the trip.

Trip Advise:

  • The best time to visit the island is April to June or September to October.
  • During the summer time please be aware of midges, those can be very annoying.
  • The price of the accommodation in Isle of Skye is high and you have to book the trip on time if you want to get a nice place. Also some of the properties they don’t allow you to stay in the room during day time.
